Ashfield is a collection of established mining communities, bordering Derbyshire. However, mining has been in decline in this part of Nottinghamshire for some years, and other traditional industries, such as textiles, are increasing in importance.

The main towns are, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Kirkby-in-Asfield and Selston.
