Under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act 1983, this seat was officially declared vacant in the House of Commons with effect from 19th March 1999, following a court case in which Mrs Jones was found guilty of making a false declaration about her election expenses.
On appeal Mrs Jones's conviction was quashed, and the Speaker declared that Mrs Jones could take up the seat again on 29th April 1999.
