§ It has never been clear to me how Returning Officers do this calculation, and to what extent they employ rounding. In its Guidance for Candidates and Agents the Electoral Commission says that "The deposit will be returned to you if you gain more than 5% of the total valid votes cast in the constituency". If taken literally, this must mean that if you only gain 5% of the vote then the deposit is forfeited. If the threshold is taken to be <5% or <=5%, the calculations suggest that 1567 deposits were lost. The House of Commons Library, however, reports a total of 1,568. Assuming this is not just a typo, the difference seems to be that the Brentford & Isleworth result:

Ruth Margaret CadburyLabour35,36457.3820%
Mary MacleodConservative23,18237.6154%
Joseph Gerald BourkeLiberal Democrat3,0835.0025%
[Electorate: 85,164; Turnout: 72.37%; Majority: 12,182 (19.77%); Total vote: 61,629; Rejected ballots: 156; Valid postal votes: 11,913]
is counted as a deposit loss for the LibDems, even though the candidate gained more than 5% of the vote.
